With wisdom and heart, Paolo Gallo offers practical tools to help readers develop and navigate a meaningful career. For those seeking to live a life that truly reflects their values, The Compass and the Radar is a must read. (Dorie Clark Adjunct Professor at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and author of 'Entrepreneurial You' and 'Stand Out')Gallo's work offers thorough and thoughtful insights on managing one's career. His questions lead to deep thinking; his tools offer outstanding solutions; and his examples inspire confidence. (Dave Ulrich Rensis Likert Professor, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan; Partner, The RBL Group)Paolo has written the most beautiful book. It is eloquent, mesmerising and refreshingly honest. But don't let his gentle style fool you, this is a book that will keep you awake, that will prompt you to consider the most profound of questions, and will remain deep within your psyche for a long time to come. It is witty, thought-provoking and deeply personal, and it changed the way I think about who I am and what I choose to do. (Vicki Culpin Professor of Organisational Behaviour, Ashridge Executive Education at Hult International Business School; author of 'The Business of Sleep')

Useful book that provide insight on how to develop a career and growth as professional. Simple language, easily understandable with pragmatic example. Recommended!
Take everything you thought you knew about finding a job or advancing in your career and throw it out the window. This book turns conventional thinking upside down. Instead of seeing what’s out there and then molding your CV to fill that position, according to Gallo the first step is looking inside, not out. Define your values, what you stand for, where you find meaning in life, and go from there. Yet it’s not the philosophical tome you might expect at this point. The book is full of practical suggestions too, along with examples and anecdotes that make it a quick first read, but you’ll find yourself referring back to its pages again and again. It will help you find hope and encouragement, direction and purpose. The most profound takeaways are all about staying human, prioritizing what’s really important, and being consistently true to yourself throughout your working life. But all the while, never losing sight of the ideal: cura personalis – cure of the entire person, which clearly extends to all aspects of life. This is the ultimate handbook for anyone navigating the work world, whether they are looking for their first job or hunting for a new one.
For starters, the author, Paolo Gallo, has a completely unique perspective - this book was originally published in Italian, and was only recently translated into a broad set of additional languages - and as the head of HR at the World Economic Forum, he's had his finger on the pulse of issues that many of us are just beginning to think about. Wrap his coaching experience into that, and you've got something special, a great read, well worth your time.
Careers aren't only about what money you make, and which position you hold in the formal hierarchy. What matters much more is: are you learning? do you love what you do? and are you able to help others? In his book, Paolo talks about these fundamental lessons, but also about much more: how you can know from a job interview whether you would fit in with a company. How to tell whether your boss is a sociopath, or a truly great mentor. How to know when it's time to go and quit, or give it another shot.Paolo worked all over the world, at places like the World Economic Forum and the World Bank. He probably saw thousands of people pass by his office over the course of his career, and has shared his stories with many more since. What he's been able to do, is to distill what life and career ultimately come down to.Actually, I know Paolo well - he was my Chief HR Officer at some point. At my work, Paolo implemented measures like transparency about salaries, and a flattening of the hierarchy. Why would you do such a thing? The answer becomes clear when reading "The Compass and The Radar": a good place to work is about more than a title or a salary.I read this book in Italian at first, and followed it around the world as it made its way to Korea, Brazil, the Arab world and many other places. It's exhilarating to see it come out in the US now. I hope many people will take a moment, read it, and take away lessons for their own career.Happy reading!
I love this book, and I would recommend it to anybody trying to be themselves in and outside the work environment. While reading, I can hear Paolo talking. I can feel his enjoyment writing it. His sense of humor is there, his thinking about tomorrow as something good for him, for us all. The book is about work, changes and – as they suggest we use in a job interview – it is about real stories, action-oriented words with very little between the lines. It is all there for the reader to capture and enjoy. Through difficult times, game changing and personal, family decisions, we all need some light (knowledge, experience, creativeness!) on how to navigate the labour market, technology, bureaucracy and whatever else may lie between us and what we may have in mind. The compass is needed. This book is a pleasurable and interesting companion along the way.
A wonderful book! So many things that stick: the father's wise words, the club of sharing, the stories and personalities, the emphasis of passion-dreams-purpose-impact, the call to become a learning machine to cope with the future of work, freedom and the price you pay, all music references, and all inspirational quotes. What I particularly enjoyed was the journey form (both career and inner) and all the examples, own and from people the author has met. It seems like he has a well of experiences and that these examples were just a few and that there is so much more…
